Design Your Own Engagement Ring Using Family Heirlooms – just like Prince Harry!

Posted on 6 December 201730 January 2020 by Glenn Chapman

Family heirlooms are priceless. A treasure that can be passed down through generations. So what if we told you, there was a way you could incorporate a piece of heritage into a bespoke piece of jewellery – or even your engagement ring?

If you have a piece of jewellery which has been passed down to you and might be sat in the back of a drawer, you can transform it into something you will wear, but retain the sentiment. This could include a stone from a necklace that is no longer worn which could be made into a beautiful ring which will be passed down for generations to your children and grandchildren.

You can even have an engagement or wedding ring made by reusing the gold. This is a lovely way of being able to use your sentimental heirloom in a ring you will wear every day, for the rest of your life – and the ring will be one of a kind!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Engagement

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently got engaged – which we are sure you will have already heard about. But have you heard the special story behind the ring that Meghan now wears on her finger?

Price Harry specifically had the ring made so it had everything that both he and Meghan would love. He chose the yellow gold colour as it is her favourite, with three stone diamonds. In fact, two of those diamonds are from one of his Mother, Diana’s brooches. He chose to have these included in the ring “to make sure that she is on this crazy journey with us”. The third diamond, Harry sourced from Botswana – a special place to him and Meghan.

We’re lucky enough to have been commissioned for rings just like this in the past and present. Everyone has a story to tell and being able to share that in a piece of jewellery makes each moment of unveiling, extra special and heart-warming.

Some men propose and encourage their partners to be part of the engagement ring creation process, which means she gets the ring she wants, and you can enjoy the experience of making a bespoke piece together! We invite you in to have a go at the bench and add your own mark too!

Top tip: If you are planning to pop the question but want your loved one to be involved in making her ring with you, why not propose using the family heirloom, or stone and tell her you want to design the ring together – she will love it!
