Granatum is an adjective that means ‘deep-red’ – which may be why many people think that this stone is always red! It is thought there are two possible origins of the word – from the word ‘pomegranate due to the colour and nature of the seeds. However, it could also come from the word ‘granum’ which means red-dye.
